Preschool

March 14, 2012
We have a sweet little friend who our friends have allowed us to teach once a week. I have taught preschoolers in the past and loved it. It's such a fun, inquisitive age. Posie and I love coming up with fun activities that we can use with her. We are working on a letter per week. We are trying to incorporate more of a montessori style approach. I am helping to plan the activities, but Posie is doing most of the teaching. This is a great experience for little Posie, who loves little ones. She may get the opportunity to teach her own little sister or brother once we adopt.

Here are some fun resources I have used so far:

Great online letter and reading activities. http://www.starfall.com/n/level-k/index/load.htm?f

Fun rap letter videos. http://www.schooltube.com/video/010c967f387a195c7827/

This is a Montessori teacher who shows you how to do montessori lessons: http://www.ehow.com/video_4403369_montessori-sand-letters-activity.html

This website I used to make several file folder games for free. http://preschoolprintables.com/

And here is an inspiring blog you might want to check out:

Here are some of things Posie has done with our friend the last few weeks.

First, we teach her the sounds of the letter. Second, we show her how to trace the letter with her finger. These are just letters written on construction paper, not like the textured montessori letters. After, we show her how to write each letter in sand. We just used a pie pan instead of a nice wooden box. After that, we practice tracing that letter and then writing it on her own on paper. We also practice writing on a wipe off board.

After, she gets to go choose something from a shelf made up just for her. It is full of activities such as this one above. Here she has to match objects to the letter it starts with.

B week: She shaved crayons onto wax paper. Then, we placed the wax paper between fabric and ironed to melt the crayons. Finally, we covered it with a butterfly shaped paper. Fun activity to add to her alphabet book.
Here we cut out a B from cardstock and hole punched it. We took an old shoe lace so she could have fun lacing.

This is a fun sensory bucket we made for her using lentils, measuring cups, spoons, bottles, etc. Items around the house. Every week we hide different objects starting with that letter.

D for dinosaur week. I still have many things I used for a dinosaur unit years ago, so we had fun getting it all out. Here is a letter matching activity that I believe I got from preschoolprintables.com. You can print out the materials in color or black and white. This particular activity is great because the child can first practice matching capital letters and then start on lowercase letters.

Here's a fun puzzle where she practiced matching numbers.
